Practical Information on Tanzania Safaris
1.Best Time to Visit
Dry Season (June to October): This is the optimal time for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. The weather is also more pleasant with minimal rainfall.
Wet Season (November to May): The landscape is lush and green, offering fewer crowds and lower prices. January to February is particularly ideal for witnessing the calving season in the Serengeti.
2.Visa Tanzania
International travelers must obtain a visa for entry into Tanzania, which is available at major entry points or online through the eVisa portal. Single-entry visas are valid for up to 90 days, while multiple-entry visas may be available for certain nationalities. Requirements include a valid passport, a completed application form, passport-sized photos, and a visa fee. Some nationalities, like EAC citizens, are exempt.
3.Packing Essentials
Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors. Layering is key as temperatures can vary widely, especially in the early morning and evening.
Footwear: Bring comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes or boots, and sandals for around the campsite.
Sun Protection: Essential items include a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen.
Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes can be an issue, so a quality repellent is a must.
Personal Items: Don’t forget basic toiletries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications.
4.Health Precautions
Vaccinations: Consult with a travel clinic for recommended vaccinations. A yellow fever vaccination is required if traveling from a country with yellow fever risk.
Malaria Prevention: Tanzania is a malaria zone, so consider prophylactic medication and take measures to prevent mosquito bites.
Water Safety: Stick to bottled or purified water to avoid waterborne diseases.
5.Respecting Wildlife
Keep a Safe Distance: Always follow your guide’s instructions and maintain a safe distance from animals.
Quiet Observation: Avoid loud noises and sudden movements to prevent startling the wildlife.
Food Storage: Do not keep food in your tent to avoid attracting animals.
No Littering: Keep the environment clean by avoiding littering.
6.Cultural Sensitivity
Respect Local Customs: Tanzania is culturally diverse, with many different tribes. Learn a few Swahili phrases and be respectful of local customs and traditions.
Dress Modestly: Especially when visiting local villages or towns.
7.Tipping
Tipping Guides and Staff: It’s customary to tip safari guides, drivers, and lodge staff. Typically, $10-15 per day for guides and $5-10 per day for lodge staff or chefs (for camping safaris) is standard.
8.Photography Tips
Bring Extra Batteries and Memory Cards: Safaris offer excellent photography opportunities, so ensure you have enough space and power.
Use a Zoom Lens: A zoom lens (200mm or higher) is ideal for capturing distant wildlife.
9.Booking in Advance
Plan Early: Safaris can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons, so it’s advisable to book several weeks or months in advance.
10.Safaris Lodges and Tented Camps
“To avoid surprises.” Africa Safaris has created a unique classification system to evaluate accommodations, offering an alternative to international ratings. This system covers midrange to upper-market luxury lodges and tented camps, ensuring honest and accurate assessments across accommodation categories. This approach guarantees clients an exceptional and well-informed safari experience.

Great Migration Safaris Luxury Africa Safaris
The Serengeti Calving Season Migration Safari focuses on the incredible wildlife spectacle where over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. This area, with its rich, nutrient-filled grasslands, provides an ideal birthing ground. During this period (January to March), predator action heightens as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas take advantage of the vulnerable newborns. This safari offers a unique opportunity to witness the circle of life in the Serengeti ecosystem.
The best time to experience the calving season in the Ndutu area is from January through March. During these months, the migratory herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles gather on the southern plains, where they give birth to their young. This period offers peak wildlife viewing, particularly for those interested in predator-prey interactions and the beginning of the Great Migration.
During the Serengeti calving season in the Ndutu area, you can expect to see massive herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles. Additionally, this season attracts numerous predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and jackals, who hunt the vulnerable newborns. Birdwatching is also exceptional during this time, with migratory bird species arriving from Europe and Asia to take advantage of the rains and plentiful food supply.
Accommodations during the 9 Days Serengeti Calving Season Safari typically range from luxury tented camps to mid-range lodges. Many lodges and camps are strategically located near the Ndutu area, ensuring that guests have quick access to the migration action and calving grounds. These accommodations offer comfort, stunning views of the plains, and immersive safari experiences with options like evening campfires and guided walks.
The 9 Days Serengeti Calving Season Safari focuses on the early stages of the Great Migration, where the focus is on calving rather than the famous river crossings. This safari offers a rare chance to witness newborns taking their first steps and the intense predator activity that follows. Unlike other migration safaris that cover long distances following the herds, the calving season safari is more concentrated in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, providing an intimate and rewarding wildlife experience.

Chloe P2025-01-24Verified Helpful and Accommodating Wonderful stay with Lewis at Meru Hostel, and booking the safari, we were made at home, taken for dinner, drinks and any extra trips or advice we required. arganier2024-08-26Verified With Glitzy Safari, and specially with Lewis we had such a great experience. It’s local tour operator, so important. I discovered Lewis, who is one of the tour operators, when I booked for a stay at Meru Hostel in Arusha. One of my dreams was seeing Ngorongoro. So I asked what can U offer me for Ngorongoro and Tarangire ? And immediately I’ve a proposal. and it was a really good proposal, so I answered right away. I really don’t regret it. We spent with my friend two wonderful days. First we went to Tarangire NP, then we spent the night not far from Ngorongoro, in a lodge, Fig Tree Lodge and Campsite, where the food and room were very good. The 2nd day, direction Ngorongoro. U can’t imagine how I was happy being in this gorgeous caldera. An experience I will never forget all my life. Our guide was so kind with us, he made everything for us and participated to this beautiful moment. We spent maybe 4 hours in the caldera. Lewis we also booked a excursion in a Chagga village. This tribe is living around Kilimanjaro. Their agriculture is based on ancestral organic fertilization where they mixed Bananas trees, Coffee plants and small other small plant ( sorry I don’t remember the name). With the local guide, we first go to Materuni waterfalls, on the foot of Kilimanjaro. Nice walk on a little path, between farms. Then we went back to our family’s guide, where we learned how make our coffee. For myself, who like so much coffee, it was so great. As U can read, we had such a nice experience with Glitzy Safari. Thank U so much Lewis. Nikita K2023-06-07Verified Safari and Kilimanjaro I did the safari to Tarangire NP, Serengeti and Ngorongoro NP. And i did the 5 day Kilimanjaro Hike! I loved both! Ofcourse totally different! But each tour was perfectly arranged! The food was good! Everything was clean! The tour guide of the Safari did really his best to see as much as different animals as he could. He asked if everybody was good to leave or stay a bit longer at the animal and he explained everything very well! And the crew of the Kilimanjaro are amazing! They always keep an eye on you if you are doing well on that mountain! Also they are so strong! They carry everything! The chef makes perfect food and the crew is very kind! I booked the tour at Meru Hostel! Lewis the owner of the hostel arranges everything so well! You don’t have to do anything at all! Also a big plus, after the Kilimanjaro Hike he arranged a buffet to eat together with the whole crew where you climbed the Kilimanjaro with! Excellent! 👌🏻
