Serengeti National Park

Overview

Serengeti National Park Safari

If there is one place on Earth that truly deserves the word “breathtaking,” it is the Serengeti. Stretching across 14,750 square kilometres of northern Tanzania, this ancient ecosystem has been home to some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife for millions of years — and today, it remains as wild, raw, and humbling as ever.

At Glitzy Safaris, we are based right here in Arusha, Tanzania. The Serengeti is our backyard, and introducing people to it is our passion. Whether you are planning your first safari or your tenth, we will make sure your Serengeti experience is everything you imagined — and more.

What Makes the Serengeti So Special?

The Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. But beyond the titles and the accolades, what makes it truly remarkable is simple — it is one of the last places on Earth where nature still runs the show completely.

There are no fences. No boundaries that the wildlife respects. Just open savannah, ancient migration routes, and a food chain playing out in real time, every single day.

The Serengeti is home to over 70 large mammal species and more than 500 bird species. It has the highest density of lions in Africa. It is the stage for the Great Migration — the largest movement of land animals on the planet. And it is the place where, more than anywhere else, you feel genuinely small in the best possible way.

The Great Migration

No single wildlife event on Earth compares to the Great Migration. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelle follow an ancient circular route across the Serengeti and into Kenya’s Masai Mara — driven purely by the rhythm of rain and fresh grass.

This is not a one-time event you can miss. It happens every year without fail, following the same seasonal pattern it has followed for thousands of years. What changes is where the action is — and knowing where to be and when is exactly what Glitzy Safaris does best.

  • January – March — Calving season in the southern Serengeti. Around 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within just a few weeks. Lion, cheetah, wild dog, and hyena are at their most active. Raw, dramatic, and unforgettable.
  • April – June — The herds begin moving northwest. The landscape turns lush and green. Fewer crowds and a quieter, more peaceful safari experience.
  • July – September — The famous Mara River crossings. Thousands of wildebeest throw themselves into crocodile-filled water in one of nature’s most intense spectacles. Peak season — book early.
  • October – December — The herds return south. Excellent game viewing with far fewer visitors than peak season. One of the best-kept secrets in safari travel.

The Big Five in the Serengeti

The Serengeti is one of the finest places in Africa to see all Big Five animals on a single safari — lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and black rhino.

Lion — With over 3,000 lions roaming the ecosystem, the Serengeti has the highest lion density in Africa. You will almost certainly encounter lions on every game drive.

Elephant — Large, relaxed herds are a common sight, especially in the western corridor and the northern Serengeti. Serengeti elephants are well-habituated to vehicles, allowing for calm and incredibly close observations.

Leopard — The most elusive of the Big Five. The Seronera Valley is particularly reliable, where leopards are often spotted lounging in the branches of acacia trees. A sharp-eyed guide makes all the difference.

Black Rhino — Rare and genuinely special. A small population exists in the park around rocky outcrops and the Moru Kopjes area. When you see one, it stays with you forever.

Buffalo — Herds can number in the thousands. A constant, impressive presence on the open plains and along river banks — and a favourite prey of the park’s large lion prides.

Luxury vs Budget — Serengeti Safari Packages

Budget Serengeti National Park Safari — Classic Serengeti Explorer

You wake up before dawn in a comfortable canvas tent, the sounds of the bush already alive around you. Breakfast is hot and filling. You share a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a small group of fellow travellers — and more often than not, you leave as friends. The guide is the same expert we use across all our Serengeti safari packages. The game drives are just as long, just as thrilling, and just as likely to deliver extraordinary wildlife sightings.

A budget Serengeti National Park safari strips everything back to what actually matters — you, your guide, and one of the greatest wilderness areas on Earth. For many of our guests, this ends up being the most memorable travel experience of their lives.

Best for: Solo travellers, backpackers, first-time Serengeti safari visitors, and anyone who wants the real thing without the premium price.

Mid-Range Serengeti National Park Safari — Migration Package

This is where your Serengeti National Park safari starts to feel truly personal. Your own private vehicle means you stop when you want, stay at a sighting as long as you like, and go where your guide recommends — not where a group vote takes you. Your lodge has a proper en-suite bathroom, a comfortable bed, and a veranda where you can sit with a cold drink and watch the sun go down over the plains.

The extra days matter too. Six days on a Serengeti safari means you can follow the Great Migration more closely, spend an afternoon watching a pride of lions without rushing, and still have time to explore different zones of the park. This package is timed around the migration calendar so your Serengeti National Park safari puts you in the right place at exactly the right moment.

Best for: Couples, small families, and travellers who want comfort, privacy, and more time to absorb the Serengeti experience.

Luxury Serengeti National Park Safari — Glitzy Serengeti Signature

Imagine waking up to the sound of elephants outside your tent — a tent that happens to have a four-poster bed, a copper bathtub, and a private deck overlooking the Serengeti plains. Breakfast is served wherever you want it. Your guide has been hand-selected for your specific interests, whether that is big cats, birdlife, or the Great Migration. The vehicle is yours alone, all day, every day.

In the evening, your camp sets a table out in the Serengeti bush — candles, linen, a private chef, and a sky full of stars with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres. There are no other guests in sight. This is not a hotel experience transplanted into the Serengeti National Park. It is a safari where the wilderness is not the backdrop — it is the entire point.

The hot air balloon safari at sunrise, drifting silently over the Serengeti plains as the migration herds move below, is something you will spend the rest of your life trying to describe to people.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park

Every season in the Serengeti offers something remarkable. The best time for you depends on what you want to experience.

June – October (Dry Season) — Peak wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources and are easy to spot. The Mara River crossings happen between July and September. Higher prices but the most dramatic and reliable sightings of the year.

November – December (Short Rains) — The park turns beautifully green. Fewer visitors, lower prices, and exceptional birdlife. One of our favourite times to visit for photographers.

January – March (Calving Season) — The southern Serengeti comes alive with newborns and the predators that follow them. Excellent value and genuinely spectacular predator action.

April – May (Long Rains) — The lowest prices of the year, sometimes 30 to 40 percent below peak rates. Wildlife is still abundant and the park feels almost entirely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for a Serengeti safari? A minimum of 3 days will give you a real taste of the Serengeti, but we recommend 5 to 7 days for the most complete experience. Longer trips allow you to cover different zones of the park and follow the migration more closely.

Is the Serengeti safe to visit? Yes, completely. Tanzania is one of Africa’s most politically stable and tourist-friendly countries. Glitzy Safaris handles all safety planning, park logistics, and emergency preparedness for every trip we operate.

Can I combine the Serengeti with other Tanzania destinations? Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. The Serengeti pairs beautifully with Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, and a beach stay in Zanzibar. Most guests combine two to four destinations in a single itinerary.

How much does a Serengeti safari cost? Budget camping safaris start from around $950 per person. Mid-range lodge packages range from $2,000 to $3,500 per person. Luxury private camps start from $5,500 per person. All Glitzy Safaris packages include park fees, guiding, and meals.
